Squalane
Squalane and squalene differ by one letter and one hydrogenation step. Squalene oxidises quickly; squalane is the hydrogenated version, stable enough to sit in a bottle. Skincare uses squalane.
The chemistry, briefly
Squalene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon, and something your own skin produces as part of its surface oil. Unsaturated means it carries double bonds, and double bonds react with oxygen — which is why squalene goes rancid. Hydrogenation saturates those bonds. The result, squalane, is stable, effectively odourless and long-lasting on a shelf. If an ingredient list says squalene rather than squalane, that is worth a second look.
Where it comes from
Squalane was historically obtained from shark liver oil, and some of it in the wider market still is. Plant-derived squalane, usually from olives or fermented sugarcane, is the same molecule from a different source. How it behaves on skin
It is an emollient — an ingredient that softens and smooths the surface. Squalane is notably light for an oil-phase ingredient. It spreads easily, absorbs without leaving a greasy film, and has no scent of its own, which is why it appears in formulas that need to feel weightless.
