Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant: an ingredient that holds water. On a label it usually appears as Sodium Hyaluronate, its salt form, which is smaller and more stable in a formula than hyaluronic acid itself.

What a humectant does
Humectants attract and hold water. In the jar that keeps a formula stable and pleasant to apply; on skin it holds water at the surface. Glycerin is the other humectant you will see constantly on ingredient lists, often positioned above hyaluronic acid, and often doing more of the work.
Sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid
They are closely related but not identical. Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid: lower in molecular weight, easier to formulate with and more stable. A label listing one rather than the other reflects a formulation decision, not a quality ranking. The complete ingredient list records the exact name used.
Using it in dry air
This is the part most guides skip. A humectant draws on whatever water is available, including moisture in the air. In a heated room in winter, or a dry climate, there is less of it to draw on. Applying to slightly damp skin and following with a moisturizer gives it water to hold and something to hold it under. That sequence matters more than the percentage printed on the front of a bottle.
