Collagen Serum: what it is, how to use it

Collagen is a structural protein in the body. The collagen molecules used in topical cosmetics are large, much larger than the 500 Dalton guideline often cited for penetration, which means topical collagen does not rebuild the skin's deeper collagen structure. Topical and hydrolysed collagen act largely at the surface: as a humectant and as a light film-former. That is real. It helps skin look and feel hydrated while it sits on the surface.

Papa & Filles Collagen Serum bottle

Why we make a collagen serum anyway

We include topical collagen for surface conditioning and pairing. The formula pairs collagen (surface conditioning) with hyaluronic acid (water-binding) and a peptide blend. Peptides have independent studies showing modest measurable effects in some contexts; the body of evidence is smaller and the effects are modest compared with some prescription actives. We state this plainly because mechanism-honest language is our position.

How to use it

Use after cleansing and, if you use one, after a lightweight water-serum. Hyaluronic acid performs best on damp skin. One pump is usually enough. Pat it in rather than rubbing.

Morning or evening: this product is a surface conditioner and a comfort step in a routine. Pair with your moisturizer if you need extra hydration.

If you have reactive skin or known sensitivities, patch test a small amount on your forearm for 24 to 48 hours before regular use.

What we won't promise

We will not promise structural changes or regeneration. The honest reading of the evidence is that topical collagen helps the look and feel of skin at the surface; peptides are present and have limited independent clinical evidence. We prefer to be clear about what a topical product is and is not.

Quick answers

Does topical collagen rebuild collagen in my skin?

No. The molecules are far larger than what passes through the outer layer of skin. Topical collagen conditions the surface: it binds water and forms a light film, which helps skin look and feel hydrated while it is there.

How much should I use?

One pump is usually enough. Apply to damp skin after cleansing, pat in, and follow with your moisturizer if you want more hydration.

Morning or night?

Either. It is a surface conditioner and a comfort step, not a treatment that needs a specific time of day.

What else is in the formula?

Hyaluronic acid for water-binding and a peptide blend. The peptide evidence is modest and we say so.
